Deuteronomy 24-25
/“You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner [foreigner] or to the fatherless, or take a widow's garment in pledge …” (24:17). God commanded the Israelites to be careful to treat the poor and foreigners (disadvantaged in society) with respect and justice, because “you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt” (24:18). God had rescued them through His own mercy, not because they were strong or worthy. Now that they prospered, they should not gather all their own harvests but leave a margin for the poor (2:10-22).
“You shall remember …” (24:22). God’s kingdom has no room for arrogance. Remembering God’s amazing kindness and mercy on our behalf helps us treat others in the same way.
