Joshua 20-22
/“So by command of the LORD the people of Israel gave to the Levites the following cities and pasturelands out of their inheritance” (21:3). Every tribe except the Levites were given their own “inheritance,” or portion of land in Canaan. The Levites, however, lived in cities scattered among the other tribes. Taking turns, they served at the altar at Shiloh and then at Jerusalem’s Temple when it was built. They didn’t need their own land because God Himself was their inheritance (Numbers 18:20).
God has promised that in Christ we “share in the inheritance of the saints of light” (Col 1:12). Like the Levites, He is our portion, and nothing we give up compares to the riches we gain in Him.
