I Samuel 8-10
/“Give us a king to judge us” (8:6). Because of societal unrest, Israel wanted a king, and so God – who was supposed to be their only King – reluctantly gave them Saul. Saul was chosen, anointed, and touched by the Spirit, and yet, from the beginning, he “hid among the baggage” – his human weaknesses caused problems (10:22). God’s ultimate desire for humanity was that they would surrender and obey Him as their real King.
“I brought up Israel out of Egypt …” (10:18). God was Israel’s real deliverer, not a human king. As we surrender to Jesus and live by the ways of His kingdom, we find the peace, order, safety, and joy our souls crave.
