Psalm 131

“O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me” (1). Nothing opposes the spirit of the world more than the spirit of humility. Without the Lord, the normal concerns of human life lead to frantic, loud, aggressive striving. But leaning on Him, we can say: “I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me” (2).

“O Israel, hope in the Lord” (3). Because our hope is in the Lord and not in ourselves or other people, we can calm our souls and be at rest.
