I Corinthians 8

“But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak” (v9). Paul argued that believers should not make decisions simply based on their “rights” (see Romans 14).  Some believers understood that idols had no real existence, and so they ate food offered to idols without guilt (v4). Other believers (perhaps still new in the faith) could not eat this food without “wounding their conscience” (v12). Paul called on mature believers to give up their “rights” to this food to protect the faith of their weaker brothers (v11-13).

“Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (v1).  Jesus calls us to lay down our privileges and rights, as He did, to love one another.
