Proverbs 17
/“The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so quit before the quarrel breaks out” (v14). The proverbs teach us to consider how we respond to potential conflict. Being quick to anger and addicted to drama does not produce righteousness. “Whoever loves transgression loves strife” (v19). In contrast, self-control is the way of wisdom: “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding” (v27). Even more, joy-filled hearts are “good medicine” (v22).
“Whoever covers an offense seeks love …” (v9). God calls us to be peace-makers who choose our words wisely, pay attention to our own hearts, and seek the well-being of others.
