Psalm 89

“I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever” (v1).  This psalm celebrates God’s promise to make David’s legacy endure: “I have sworn to David my servant: ‘I will establish your offspring forever” (v3-4). However, Israel was currently experiencing loss, destruction, and failure. “But now you have cast off and rejected … you have laid his stronghold in ruins” (v38-40). God – whose plan to “establish” David was connected to the future Messiah – called Israel to trust Him beyond their understanding.

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne” (v14). Jesus showed that God’s justice and love can be clearly seen in suffering and death, and His promises endure all the way to resurrection.
