Lamentations 1-2

“Jerusalem remembers in the days of her affliction and wandering all the precious things that were hers from days of old” (1:7). Lamentations gives words to the grief of God’s people during the destruction of Jerusalem and their exile to Babylon. “All the precious things” given by God as blessings, such as the land, the Temple and its sacred objects, and the joy or worship, had been lost due to Israel’s sin (1:8). Yet, says the author, “the Lord is in the right” (1:18).

“The LORD has done what he purposed; he has carried out his word” (2:17). We can trust that God will also fulfill His promises of mercy and full restoration for those put their hope in Christ.
