Matthew 3

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John” (13). The One who was announced by angels and born without sin did not need to be baptized. However, Jesus told John that he did it “to fulfill all righteousness” (15). As our representative, the new Adam (I Corinthians 15), Jesus was walking the path of righteousness for our sakes. When the Spirit descended on him, he made it possible for the Spirit to descend on us, too.

“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (17). Because Jesus came and shared our humanity, by faith in him we share in the Spirit and in the Father’s favor and love.
