Matthew 24

“Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down” (2). Jesus was referring to the total destruction of the Temple which would occur in 70AD, but the disciples thought he was referring to “the end of the age” (3). Jesus explained that they would face “wars and rumors of wars” and persecution (9-14) but these signs would not indicate the final end. “But about that date or hour” – the Messiah’s return – “no one knows ... only the Father” (36).

“Who then is the faithful and wise servant?” (45). Jesus said that faithful servants “keep watch” by doing the will of the Master, ready at any time for his appearance (44-46).
