Psalm 18

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me” (16-17). In a warrior culture that valued courage and strength, the psalmist admitted that his enemies were “too strong” for him and he needed help. The circumstances of his life had become like entangling cords, drowning him (4-5), until he called on the Lord for rescue. Then God “parted the heavens and came down ...” (9).

“He rescued me, because he delighted in me” (19). The Lord does not help us reluctantly. He moves heaven and earth to rescue us and set us in a “spacious place” (19).
