Judges 14-16

“I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife” (14:2). Samson, the special son God promised (ch 13), lived according to pagan values rather than God’s covenant ways (Deut 7:3), like all Israel. He repeatedly chose Philistine women, ate unclean food, and defied his parents. God worked through him for Israel’s sake (14:4), although Samson himself did not recognize or value God’s presence. “He did not know the Lord had left him” (16:20).

“He will take the lead in delivering Israel” (13:5). Samson, a backward and sinful leader, represented Israel’s failures and God’s patient mercy. One day, a better Promised Son would fulfill the covenant and achieve real deliverance for Israel and the world.
