John 10

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (27). The people of Jesus’ day were surrounded by persuasive voices, just as we are today. The Pharisees urged people to trust in their religious identity and in the Law. Others trusted in political power or the hope of wealth and pleasure. Jesus said that these competing voices promising satisfaction would ultimately “steal, kill and destroy” (10), but he, the Good Shepherd, came to bring abundant life.

“The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep” (11). Jesus calls us to resist the false promises of the world, which lead to disaster. Abundant life comes from following the voice of the One who died for us.
