Judges 4-5
/“God chose new leaders when war came to the city gates, but not a shield or spear was seen” (5:8). Deborah’s victory song celebrated God’s great deliverance of Israel through unlikely people. Deborah herself was the only recorded female judge (national leader) of Israel, and God used her to encourage Barak to fight against Sisera’s army. Unexpectedly, Sisera was killed by Jael, and many other “willing volunteers” took part (5:9). Some with weapons, on the other hand, stayed home (5:16-17).
“When the people willingly offer themselves – praise the Lord!” (5:2). God continues to look for willing volunteers to join him in his mission. Witnessing to Christ, being agents of God’s love and mercy, we can be part of his great deliverance.
