Psalm 131

“My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not haughty” (1). The psalmist understood that the great gift of life in fellowship with God is that we can tackle hard things as His children, rather than trying to be gods ourselves. We don’t have to carry the burden of “great matters” alone; instead, we can acknowledge our Lord as King. Under His authority and wisdom, our human capacity to understand, discover, invent, organize, and create produces good fruit, and our tendency to pride is checked.

“I have calmed and quieted myself ...” (2). Knowing the Lord means that even as responsible adults, we can live out our earthly assignments like children who trust their mother and have calm and quiet hearts (2).
