Deuteronomy 18

“The Levitical priests—indeed, the whole tribe of Levi—are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel ... the Lord is their inheritance, as hepromised them” (18:1-2). The Levites and priests who lived on the offerings of the people were held to a very high standard. Their holy service to God had to be the opposite of pagan divination or sorcery, witchcraft, or consulting the dead (18:11). Priests or prophets who, instead of honoring God and serving righteously, deceived people by false prophecy, were put to death (18:20-22).

“The Lord is their inheritance” (18:2). As God’s people made holy through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are called to be a “kingdom of priests” in the world – a visible reflection of God’s love and holiness.
