Psalm 35

“Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me” (1). The psalmist shows us how to deal with feeling attacked, whether by human or spiritual forces “too strong” for us (10). Secure in God’s love, he boldly asked the Lord to fight for him. “Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid” (2). Recognizing his own weakness, the psalmist waited expectantly to hear God’s voice, saying “I am your salvation” (3).

“Lord, you have seen this ... Awake, and rise to my defense!” (22-23). Attacked by temptations, fear, unwanted thoughts, or the schemes of others, we can’t save ourselves. God is our strong defender who knows how to rescue us.
