Songs of Songs 4-8
/“Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away” (8:7). Love is more permanent, powerful, and valuable than anything else on earth, according to the Bible’s ancient marriage-poem. Someone trying to ‘buy’ real love would be “utterly scorned” (8:7), because love is not for purchase; it is what makes the rest of life meaningful. Love is “as strong as death” (6) and “like a blazing fire, like a mighty flame” (8:6). Love motivates us to action, sacrifice, and enduring commitment.
“Place me like a seal over your heart” (8:6). Human love gives us a glimpse of the much greater love of God, whose love for us motivated Him to send Jesus and whose commitment to us is unfailing, unshakeable, forever.
