Luke 13
/“But unless you repent, you too will all perish” (3). People in Israel feared Pilate’s violent power (1), and they feared random disasters like the falling tower that killed eighteen (4). They believed that terrible things happened because these people were “sinners” (2). But Jesus corrected them (3), saying that these troubles were not the result of human sin. Further, Jesus said, the real disaster would be to be separated from the Father for eternity – to perish.
Rather than fearing worldly disasters and trying to create personal security, we are called to pay attention to the kingdom of God, which seems “like a mustard seed” (19) but is of infinite importance. In the end, our life in Jesus’ kingdom is what truly matters.
