I Samuel 20-24

Chapter 19 closed with David being protected by God, and Saul – overcome by the Holy Spirit – praising God, but not changing in character. Saul’s son, Jonathan, was put in the terrible position of still loving his murderous father while knowing David’s heart and loving him. The tragic break between Saul and David was complete. Four hundred men, whose lives were in tragic disorder, gathered to David (22:2) and he became their captain.

David was not sinless, but his character, built on his heart after God, brought him to repentance when he sinned, and nobility when he could have been self- centered (ch. 24).
