John 8-9

“We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” (8:33). When Jesus promised that those who accepted the truth about him would be set free (8:32), some Jews protested that they did not need this freedom. Yet, they were ruled by Romans, their ancestors had been slaves in Egypt, and even more, they were slaves to sin (8:34). Only those who could confront themselves honestly would be able to accept Jesus’ gift.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (8:36). When we admit that we are held captive by sin, Jesus breaks our chains and brings us into the freedom of his kingdom.
