Luke 17
/“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come’” (17:1). Jesus reserved his strongest words for individuals who naturally held positions of leadership in society. He warned people to “watch themselves” (3) so that they did not harm or lead astray “one of these little ones” (2) – children, the vulnerable, those listening to and following leaders. Holding authority, as well as being respected or followed, carries special responsibility and consequences (2).
“The kingdom of God is in your midst” (21). The Pharisees wanted spectacular signs (20), but Jesus said that we see God’s kingdom revealed “in our midst” when his Spirit touches and changes all our relationships.
