Mark 15
/“And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him” (20). Just as the brutal soldiers mocked Jesus as a false “king”, “those who passed by hurled insults at him” (29) and “the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves” (31). As our Messiah, Jesus bore our sins and endured our shame (Isaiah 53). He experienced the defeat and failure that is ‘natural’ to sinful humanity, all the way to death.
“Surely this man was the Son of God!” (39). Because he loves us, Jesus became like us in suffering so that we could become like him in victory.
