Matthew 19-20
/“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (20:28). Jesus declared that his own example of self-sacrifice for the sake of others was at the heart of his kingdom. He warned his disciples that they would have to drink the cup of suffering to follow him, rather than imitate the status-seeking of worldly leaders (20:25). Yet, as they followed Jesus, they would lack nothing, and they would inherit eternal life (19:29).
“So the last will be first, and the first will be last” (20:16). Jesus, the crucified and homeless King, calls us to follow him by loving and serving as he did.
