I Samuel 29-31

“Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered” (30:22). Leaning on their human sense of “fairness,” David’s men did not want to share their battle riches with the soldiers who had stayed behind out of exhaustion (30:10). But David objected, reminding the men that their victory was due to God’s help (30:23), and therefore everyone deserved an equal share in the spoils. “Fairness” included a deep sense of their collective dependence on God.

“All will share alike” (30:24). Comparison and pride fall apart in God’s presence. Whatever our strengths (or weaknesses), we all depend on his mercy, and he generously allows us to share Christ’s victory.
