Genesis 49-50

“I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan” (50:5). Jacob had followed the Lord’s leading to move to Egypt, and he died there. Yet he wanted to be buried with his family back in Canaan, symbolizing his trust in God’s promise to make his descendants a great nation in that land. In the same way, Joseph, who had lived his whole life in Egypt, married and worked among Egyptians, asked his people to “carry my bones” back to Canaan (Gen 50:25; Heb 11:22).

These people of faith did not receive all God’s promises in this life, yet they “welcomed them from a distance”. They were looking for “a better country, a heavenly one” (Heb 11:13-16).
