Jeremiah 36-40
/“They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud” (38:6). When the prophet Jeremiah was thrown into a well to die, he was rescued not by religious leaders, but by the “Cushite” foreigner Ebed-Melek, a palace official who trusted God (ch 38-39). Ebed-Melek risked the king’s wrath by advocating for Jeremiah. “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet ...he will starve to death” (38:9).
By living out his faith in this courageous act, Ebed-Melek became part of God’s people and received God’s promise: “I will rescue you on that day ...I will save you” (39:17-18).
