Jeremiah 10-11
/“Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk” (10:5). Jeremiah pointed out the futility of depending on lifeless idols (10:9). Just as ancient people took God’s gifts of wood and gold and made them into ‘gods’, modern humans take God’s gifts (work, finances, comfort) and twist them into idols that rival God. Only “the eternal King” who made everything is worthy of worship (10:12). Jeremiah received death threats for declaring this truth to those who thought they were God’s people (ch 11).
“The Lord is the true God” (10:10). Idols will always fail us and lead us into trouble, but worshiping the Creator brings abundant life and real joy.
