Luke 9-11

The success of the disciples and their close relationship with Jesus led them to believe they had developed a proprietary relationship to ministry. John had confidently reported to Jesus, “We saw someone driving out demons in your name and tried to stop him because he is not one of us (9:49).” Jesus responded, “Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you.” Being “one of us” may have value but it does not define the Kingdom of God.

In Luke 11:23, Jesus, answering accusations that his power was demonic, boldly responded, “Whoever is not with me is against me… .” It is not necessary that everyone be one of us, “with us;” it is vitally necessary we be “with him.”
