Esther 1-4

“There will be no end of disrespect and discord” (1:18). Esther’s story opens with the grandeur of the Persian court. However, the “vast wealth” and “splendor and glory” (1:4) of Xerxes was poisoned by pride, excess, and discord. After refusing to obey her husband’s arrogant command, Queen Vashti was deposed, and Esther arose in her place; meanwhile, the palace was filled with conspiracies and murderous intrigue (2:21). But Mordecai and Esther were set apart. Mordecai chose to honor the king, and Esther chose to “follow Mordecai’s instructions” (2:20) and help her people.

In a world of “disrespect and discord,” God’s people are called “for such a time as this” (4:14) to follow a different way: the Way of peace, truth, and righteousness.
