Psalm 60

“You have set up a banner for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow” (v4).  God’s promise to Israel was that as long as they followed him, he would lead them in triumph over their enemies.  When they lost a battle, the psalmist assumed, “You have rejected us” (v1).  Yet he trusted that God was still raising a banner of salvation for those who were willing to run to him, instead of depending on themselves.  “Vain is the salvation of man!” (v11).

“With God we shall do valiantly” (v12).  Alone, we are vulnerable and defeated.  But Jesus came to “destroy the works of the devil” (I John 3:8), and we share his victory.
