“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (v14).  God’s holiness is so fiercely brilliant that humans, after the fall, could not be in his direct presence (v18).  The Old Testament describes appearances of God’s emissary, “the angel of the Lord,” and Moses, protected behind a rock, glimpsed God’s back.  But Jesus cloaked his glory in human weakness and walked among us. 

We know what the Father is like because Jesus has “made him known” (v18) to us.  Even more, God is no longer far away but comes near to each of us by his Spirit.
