Psalm 48

“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God!  His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion … the city of the great King. Within her citadels God has made himself known as a fortress” (v1-3).  God’s glory is present in his entire universe, but he dwells in a special way in the city, where men and women live.  Israel’s temple was in Jerusalem, and God revealed himself there; our destiny is also God’s own renewed city (Rev 22). God reveals his character – fortress, deliverer, provider – in the everyday struggles of his people, as we live as his witnesses in our cities.
