Psalm 149

“Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King” (v2). The psalmist’s “new song” centered on the joy of being God’s own people, the delight of belonging to the Creator. Israel was meant to be a foretaste of God’s purpose for all humanity – a community focused on worship (v3), singing for joy even through the night (v5), unafraid of their enemies and concerned for justice (v6-9).

“For the Lord takes pleasure in His people” (v4). God created us for His own pleasure, and through Jesus Christ we can embrace our purpose and delight in being His children.
