II Samuel 17-19

“Shall anyone be put to death in Israel this day? For do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?”  (19:22).  The sons of Zeruiah – Joab, Abishai, and Asahel – were excellent warriors, but quick to violence.  After the tragedy of Absalom’s coup and death, David wanted to celebrate his victory – not continue with bloodshed.  David realized that being king again was a privilege, an act of God, so he offered pardons to many who had betrayed him.

“Let not my lord hold me guilty …” (19:19). David, knowing God made him king, had the strength to be generous and forgiving. His confidence wasn’t in the sword but in the Lord’s work in life.
