I Kings 12-16

“And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as David his father had done” (15:11).  King Asa’s righteous behavior was linked to David (his ancestor, not father) because David also led others to trust in the Lord. In contrast, Asa’s other predecessors, including Solomon, raised up idols and led their people into sin, rejecting the protection and prosperity of God’s covenant.  King Asa even had to demote his own mother Maacah due to her idolatry (15:13).

“The heart of Asa was wholly true to the Lord all his days” (15:11).  God doesn’t judge us by what our ancestors did or what our neighbors do, but instead, by the condition of our own hearts.
