Matthew 19

“But many who are first will be last, and the last first” (v30).  Jesus pointed out that those who were successful in the world’s eyes weren’t necessarily the ones approved by God. He affirmed faithfulness in marriage (something traditional Jewish culture revered), but He also affirmed singleness for various reasons (v10-12).  He challenged the “rich young ruler,” who seemed the epitome of moral and financial success, to sell everything (v21), while He blessed the children who came to Him with nothing (v14).

“To such belongs the kingdom of heaven” (v14).  The only way we can come to God is with open arms, realizing our neediness and His great mercy.
