Exodus 15-17

“See, the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore, on the sixth day He gives you bread for two days” (16:29).  The Israelites had lived in Egypt for generations and didn’t really know the Lord.  As God led them toward the Promised Land, before giving them the Law that would form Israel’s culture, He gave them the gift of the Sabbath.  They would collect manna (already miraculous) daily, but on the sixth day, God gave them extra, so that they could rest on the seventh day and learn to trust Him.

“So the people rested on the seventh day” (16:30). Obedience to God’s commands starts with trusting Him as our Savior and Provider.  Sometimes He calls us to simply rest.
