Exodus 18
/“What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone” (v17-18). Moses was functioning as the only spiritual leader and judge of the people, and his father-in-law Jethro pointed out that this was unsustainable. Jethro recommended that Moses appoint “able men” (v21) to lead smaller groups so that he did not “wear out.”
“If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure …” (v23). God wants us to endure not just for today, but for the whole race. His way leads us to both peace and fruitfulness.
