Mark 14
/“And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him” (v40). The disciples who were Jesus’ closest companions could not stay awake with him in his worst hour, as he wept and struggled. After his arrest, “they all left him and fled” (v50). Their collective betrayal was articulated by Peter’s desperate lie, “I do not know this man” (v71). Jesus had to finish his journey to the cross completely alone.
“Take, this is my body” (v22). Jesus knew our best efforts would always end in failure and brokenness. While we were still his enemies, he loved us and gave us the gift of his life.
