Numbers 1-2

“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list … But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony …they shall take care of it” (1:49-50).  In the wilderness, God told Moses to count how many adult men were available as warriors; however, the Levites were not counted in the same way.  Whether during a battle or in peace time, their job was the same – to guard and take care of the place of worship, which was the center of Israelite life.

“Every man able to go to war” (1:45).  The Levites’ job was to remind God’s people that “Not by their own sword did they win the land” (Psalm 44:3). All our battles are His.
