Luke 20
/“Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” (v22). The religious leaders knew that Jesus’ holiness, power, and authority threatened their own status. They tried to “catch him” by questions that would cause trouble. But their question about “tribute” (taxation) backfired. Jesus pointed out the image of Caesar, saying “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's” (v25). As humans made in God’s image, Jesus implied, we owe Him everything.
“Tell us by what authority you do these things …” (v2). Jesus calls us to accept His authority in every area of our lives. When we stop resisting, we find He is a kind and compassionate Teacher.
