Judges 17-18

“In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (17:6). During this time in Israel, the lack of leadership produced both societal and spiritual chaos. Micah set up his own household shrine and idols, and he gave his personal religion legitimacy by hiring a “real” Levitical priest (17:7-13). Rather than honoring God, the power of spirituality (symbolized by Micah’s priest) became something for the tribes to manipulate, buy, and fight over (ch 18).

“You take my gods that I made, and the priest …” (18:24). Religion that is human-focused becomes just another symbol of status and power. Sincere faith in Jesus causes us to repent, love others, and walk in humility.
