Psalm 53

“The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good” (v1).  This psalm comforted Israel, reminding them that God saw those who “eat up my people as they eat bread” (v4) and promising that God would rescue Israel from their enemies (v5-6).  In the New Testament, however, Paul revealed the fuller truth: we (Jews and Gentiles alike) are sinners who need rescue from ourselves (Romans 3:10-12).

“O, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!” (v6).  Our worst enemy is our own temptation to sin; we are all “fools” (v1) who need our Savior’s rescue.  Jesus loved us enough to give himself to set us free.
