Psalm 58

“Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge the children of man uprightly?” (v1).  The psalmist asked if even “gods” or mighty rulers judge rightly, and the answer was no (v2).  Because human leaders themselves are sinful, the psalmist said, “in your hearts you devise wrongs” (v2-4). Only God can separate the righteous from the wicked, and the psalmist longed to see His perfect justice accomplished on earth.

“Surely there is a God who judges on earth” (v11).  God calls us to work for justice on earth with humility, not pride, remembering that there is only one perfect Judge.  He sees each heart, and we are accountable to Him.
