Proverbs 18
/“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion” (v2). The ability to express our opinions has been amplified today by social media, and the proverbs recognizes this as a danger. The quick posting and sharing of “delicious morsels” (v8) often leads to damage, just like hasty words spoken out loud can bring “ruin” (v7). The proverbs say that true wisdom requires patient listening (v13), not just fiery reactions and emotions.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits” (v21). God promises that our patient efforts to understand, practice self-control, and speak words that build up will produce a great harvest.
