Philippians 1

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment ...” (v9-10). Paul knew that the secret to the Philippians’ spiritual growth was the quality of their love. As they grew in sincere love for Jesus and for others, they would begin (like Paul, who was being treated unfairly, v17) to understand their circumstances differently (v11-17). Rather than defending their rights and fighting for their goals on earth, they would be free to live for Christ (v27-28).

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (v21). Because we are secure in God’s love for eternity, we can love others wisely and with discernment, without fear of the cost.
