Isaiah 40-42
/“Behold my servant ... in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations ...” (42:1). Isaiah described the coming Messiah as God’s answer for Israel in a surprising form. Rather than a warrior like David, “He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break” (42:2). His method of conquering humanity’s enemies – sin and death – would be to offer His own life.
“A faintly burning wick he will not quench” (42:3). Rather than a “justice” that would give us what we deserve, the Messiah died in our place so that we could experience mercy and grace.
