Isaiah 53-54

“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted” (v4). Isaiah prophesied that God’s chosen servant, the Messiah, would not seem like a conquering warrior. Rather than defeating Israel’s enemies with a sword, this humble Savior experienced suffering. Rather than condemn the world, the Messiah identified with all sin-stained humanity to defeat our worst enemy. “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed” (v5).

“Because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors” – because He became like us, we share His victory (53:12).
