Ezekiel 29-30

“Because you have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel, when they grasped you with the hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke ...” (29:6-7). God rebuked Egypt for being false security for Israel. Instead of leaning on the Lord, who had redeemed them from slavery and made them a nation, Israel looked to Egypt for help against the Babylonian empire. But mighty Egypt could not provide protection; Babylon invaded and eventually conquered Israel.

Political structures and other sources of power are false security for God’s people. He alone is our refuge and defender; He can be trusted to keep us safe.
